The cars are very detailed and shiny, the track is grey and the gravel is gravel coloured. Moving on to the graphics of the game, they are good. Over the next 15 laps I was completely distracted from racing by the incredible scenes going on around me, the rain was coming down, my cars performance was suffering, the water coming to rest on the track was nothing short of brilliant and I think this is the best part of the whole game, it's been done so well it is easily the best weather system in any game I have ever played. I was cruising around Australia in my Toro Rosso when my (reasonably well voiced) race engineer announced it was about to rain. The dynamic weather, simply, made me squeak like a 12 year old girl in the proximity of a puppy. When you bin it into a barrier at 200mp/h you get a red screen, the wheels fall off and you are politely advised you cannot continue the race, so no Burnout style cinematics here, but F1 is a serious racing game, stop trying to crash your car into your opponents. There is no "extended damage" to the cars. Although I believe the F1 cars are a lot more robust than they are in real life, punctures happen, wing damage is the most common occurrence, and both make a notable difference to car control. Both of these issues have been addressed, resolved, and developed to a high standard. I played the life out of Dirt2, and the main complaint from myself and many others, were the lack of a weather system and the menial damage system. Obviously there is a notable difference in that F1 is racing entirely (in theory) on tarmac, the way the cars drive on the different surfaces, the kerbs, the grass and the gravel are all highly impressive, and as realstic as you play the game. the flashback system makes a return, and it doesn't take much imagination to expect Ken Block to overtake you an make a smarmy comment.

This is the company that built Dirt2, and it has used a big part of this to lay the foundations for this game. You can make a driving game as shiny or as innovative as you like, but without this core you fall down the proverbial slippery slope to mediocrity, and it is with great delight that I can announce CodeMasters does not let itself down.

I'm going to tackle the big and unavoidable point of the driving gameplay first. I'm a big fan of Formula One, watching a majority of the races and often wishing I could be sat in one of the coveted single seaters myself, and with the release of this game I was hoping my wishes could be fulfilled. F1 2010: The return of a much beloved sport to a real console after a long absence brings about an overhaul by CodeMasters looking to firmly plant the franchise back in the world of gaming.
